Biography
Natalie Close is a visual anthropologist and artist whose work has been shaped by living and travelling across Africa, Asia and Europe. Now based in Finland, she draws inspiration both from the Nordic environment around her and from places, people and visual traditions encountered further afield.
Rather than beginning with a fixed theme, Natalie often starts with something that catches her attention: an animal, a landscape, a shape or an ordinary moment that makes her stop and look more closely. Much of her recent work reflects the environment in which she now lives, including the landscapes and wildlife of Finland, Estonia and the wider Nordic and Baltic region.
Practice
Her work is led primarily by linocut printmaking, alongside woodblock printing, acrylic, watercolour and Indian ink. Across these different media, she is drawn to clean lines and areas of strong, block colour. Animals, plants and landscapes appear frequently, but her subjects also extend to architecture, people and observations from travel and everyday life.
Process
For her linocuts, Natalie begins by drawing the image before transferring it to lino and carving the design by hand. The finished block is inked and individually hand printed. The nature of this process means that no two impressions are completely identical. Small variations in ink and printing are part of the character of each handmade print.
Some works are produced as limited editions, particularly prints intended as wall art, while other pieces such as art cards are produced without a fixed edition size.
